The question of hope : photographs in Western Oregon

    Rare Books

"The question of hope is especially urgent because of environmental threats. One such peril, deforestation, is the subject of the first half of this book, where pictures of it suggest a war zone. The subject of the second half of the book, light on the sea, might initially seem disconnected from the first, but in combination they have about them what Samuel Johnson once called "the stability of truth," in this case a recognizable balance of harsh facts and dateless, mysterious consolation. Robert Adams has studied both elements--our failed stewardship and the promise implied by beauty--across much of the American West. He has over the years also photographed them near where he lives on the Oregon coast, and it is this local caring that gives The Question of Hope much of its intensity."--Jacket.

    Rare Books

"Robert Adams recently came across a group of 24 pictures he made in Denver in the early 1970s. These photographs, which informed his later work, are published here for the first time. They offer new insight into the photographer’s way of seeing and thinking about the human condition, the profound influences of which are still being felt generations later"--Publisher's description.

He and his brother Feliciano receive this grant of land, called El Alisal, in 1823, and they lived there until 1840, when it was sold to Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1840. This house is still standing and occupied. It can be seen from the Natividad—Gonzales Highway, going south.

George Forby letter to Elizabeth Dowd Forby

    Manuscripts

In this letter to his wife, Forby describes his journey to California via Cuba and Panama. He witnessed two burials at sea during his voyage, and called Panama "the most singular place I ever saw." Of San Francisco, he writes "you never saw such a set of long faces and idle people as there are here," owing to the decline in mining. Nevertheless, Forby is determined to stay and "try to face it through."

El Molino Viejo (The Old Mill), circa 1910

    Visual Materials

On a different tract of land in San Marino, Arabella Huntington bought this property planning to renovate it for her son Archer. This renovation never occurred, and the Old Mill still stands today (July 20, 2010). The label that accompanies this photo in the album reads "No. 41 Old mill at El Molino Ranch, about 1910." A newspaper clipping is laid in to the album about missing treasure and a ghost that supposedly haunts the mill.
