The collection consists of the literary and personal papers of American novelist, essayist and political activist Mary Hunter Austin (1868-1943), best known for her portrayals of life in California and New Mexico. It includes correspondence and literary manuscripts by both Austin and numerous other authors, editors and friends, as well as ephemera and photographs. Literary manuscripts include Austin's personal journals, short stories, poems, essays, and numerous drafts of novels. The correspondence deals with Austin's personal life and business dealings as well as her activities with Indian rights and the water right controversies in California's Owens Valley and in the Southwest. There are also materials related to Austin's interests in folklore and religion in New Mexico and the Southwest. The more than 1,200 photographs in the collection date from 1869 to the 1920s and include personal and family photographs of Mary Austin, her friends, relatives, homes, and various topics related to her interests.

The collection contains source material about Edward Fitzgerald Beale (1822-1893) which was gathered by Laurence R. Cook and later by Andrew F. Rolle. It contains original manuscripts which date from 1940-1983 (mainly student theses), correspondence (1951-1983), notes, copies of other materials, audiotapes, photographs, and microfilm. Subjects represented in the collection include: Beale's role in the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army Camel Corps, Decatur House (Washington, D.C.), exploration of the Southwest and establishment of roads, Tejón Ranch, Fort Tejón, cattleman Henry Miller, and George R. Gliddon. There are also two negatives of a photograph of Navy Admiral David Dixon Porter. There is also a microfilm copy of correspondence by Stephen Mallory White, as well as letters from Beale to James K. Polk and John M. Clayton. There are also letters that came from the Robert Todd Lincoln collection of the papers of Abraham Lincoln and a letterbook kept by Robert F. Stockton.

The collection consists of the personal, family and business papers of Cave Johnson Couts (1821-1874) and his son, Cave Johnson Couts, Jr. (1856-1943). There is personal and business correspondence, army papers of Cave J. Couts (1837-1855), accounts, land papers, legal papers, survey correspondence and field notes of Cave J. Couts, Jr., family papers, photographs, ephemera, and 250 maps.

The James William Eldridge collection consists of letters, manuscripts, documents, printed military forms, autographs, ephemera, and approximately 4000 portraits and contemporary photographs, which date from 1797-1902. The collection documents military history of the Civil War, from both the Union and Confederate sides, concentrating on commanding officers, military and naval operations and administration, the armed forces of South Carolina and Virginia, and the everyday life of the common soldiers (including prisons and medical care). Also included are materials on civilian administration and politics during the war years, concentrating on governors, mayors, and congressmen. The bulk of the collection deals with the American Civil War, although there is some material on the antebellum and post-war politics and military history, including the raid on Harpers Ferry and the post-war Navy. The collection contains materials from US presidents James A. Garfield, Ulysses S. Grant, Benjamin Harrison, and Rutherford B. Hayes.
