  This typescript includes meeting minutes from the Grantsville School of the Prophet and Theological Class, in Grantsville, Utah. Minutes were recorded on a bi-weekly basis from September 11, 1871 to May 6, 1872, with additional entries from December 1872 and February 1873. Primarily focuses on matters of school policy and finance, but also includes references to marriage, testimony from the Sandwich Islands, and discussion of possible westward travel. Includes a list of names of school brethren from 1871-1873. Minutes were kept by J.R. Clark, secretary. Although entitled "Diaries and Records of Joshua R. Clark and Mary Louis Woolley Clark, 1840-1938," there seems to be nothing here written by Mary Clark, and it appears that portions of the original document are not included.

  Autobiography of Edward Walker Clark [microform] : c.1820-1904

  Microfilm of Edward Walker Clark's autobiography, kept through 1904. Clark begins with describing his young adulthood in England, including working as an attendant for a wealthy family and as an apprentice carpenter. He traveled to London in 1840 and describes his conversion to Mormonism in 1847. He mentions working at a furniture store in 1848 before he and his family sailed to the United States on the ship Ellen. Clark arrived in Council Bluffs in 1851 and worked as a coffin maker for emigrants to the gold fields until 1852, when the Clarks traveled to Utah with the Henry Miller company (Clark's eldest daughter was killed by a wagon wheel during the trip). The Clarks settled in Provo, and in 1858 Clark was posted at Echo Canyon during the Utah War. He describes his 1874 mission to England, followed by notes on his life in Utah through 1904.

  Autobiography and diary of John Clark Dowdle, [microform] : c.1852-1894

  Microfilm of the diary and autobiography of John Clark Dowdle. The volume recounts his childhood and conversion to Mormonism, gives a detailed account of his journey across the plains to Utah in 1852-1853, and recounts his daily life in Utah. Some specific events he writes about include finding the body of Bailey Lake, who had apparently been killed by Bannock Indians, in 1858; his 1862 trip to St. George; his journey to Las Vegas in the mid-1860s; his involvement in Utah schools; and spending 1873 looking for work before settling in Willard City. The last entries were made in about 1894. The first few pages of the volume include a summary of each chapter.

  Diary of Heber Bennion, volume 4 [microform] : 1889

  Microfilm of Heber Bennion's diary, volume 4, kept from January-July 1889 while he was traveling in the Eastern United States, particularly Washington D.C. In Washington Bennion visited the White house and shook hands with President Cleveland, and also visited the Supreme Court, Mount Vernon, the Treasury, and the Smithsonian. He also took trips to New York City (where he saw the Brooklyn Bridge, Madison Square Garden, and the New York Medical University), New York state (including Rochester, Niagara Falls, and Palmyra), Baltimore, New England, and Pennsylvania (including Pittsburgh and Philadelphia). He also writes of traveling back to Utah, including stops in Wheeling, Chicago, and the Grand Canyon.

  Diary and autobiography of John Clark Dowdle [microform] : approximately 1845-1894

  Microfilm of an autobiography and diary kept by John Clark Dowdle and identified as Nampa, Idaho. The autobiography begins in approximately 1845, and in a mix of reminiscences and diary entries describes Dowdle's family background, traveling overland in 1852, an 1864 trip to California, his mission to aid emigrants traveling overland from Missouri in 1866, and his daily activities in Utah, including school supervision in and around Logan and Willard, through 1894.

  Diaries and family history of Elias Smith [microform] : 1836-1888

  Microfilm of a family history and twelve diary volumes kept by Elias Smith between 1836 and his death in 1888. The reel opens with a will written by Smith's grandfather Asael Smith for his wife and children (1799). That is followed by a volume of family history and genealogy kept by Elias Smith. The first diary volume, dated 1836, was kept while Smith was traveling to Kirtland, Ohio. The 1837 volume was kept while Smith was living at Kirtland; the 1838-1839 volume describes his life in Far West, Missouri; the 1843-1851 volume commences when Smith left Nashville, Iowa, for a postal job in Illinois, and also includes commentary on anti-Mormon sentiment; and the 1851-1854 diary covers his overland journey to Utah and work as a probate judge in Salt Lake City. The remaining seven diaries detail Smith's life in Utah from 1859-1888, focusing on his court and agricultural work. The manuscripts are on two microfilm reels as follows: Reel 1 - Asael Smith letter, family history and genealogy, and diaries dated 1836-1872; Reel 2 - continuation of 1836-1872 diary through 1874, and diaries dated 1874-1888.
