This picture of Dam #1 taken in February 1913, shows the foundation being prepared for the first pour of concrete. The elaborate wooden trestlework was needed to hoist the mixed concrete and chute it down onto the work face.

This dramatic view shows the penstock being laid up the 80 percent grade above Powerhouse #1 during August of 1913. This "penstock pipe" was built in Germany by the famed Krupp Works, using metallurgy similar to that needed for cannon barrels.

This view of Unit #1 in Powerhouse #1 shows how each generator was flanked by two Pelton waterwheels. This was done to equalize the tremendous forces placed on the common shaft joining the waterwheels to the generator. At this time, Big Creek's two powerhouses employed the largest Pelton-style waterwheels ever built.

Stone & Webster #11, which began life in 1866 as Central Pacific #24 "Montana," is working the gravel pit in the Basin in February 1913. Trainloads of gravel were carried several miles to a crushing and mixing plant, where the rock was made into concrete for the three dams then under construction on the perimeter of the Basin.

Photo shows the complex system of railroads and chuting employed to pour concrete the dams at Huntington Lake. Steam locomotives ran trains of three-yard dump cars from the mixing plant to each dam site. At the dam site the standard gauge trains dumped their concrete into one-yard dump cars that were pulled onto the dam on a narrow gauge track with a gasoline powered locomotive.
